EVROD CASSIMY: A NEWSCASTER WHO ALSO SINGS PROFESSIONALLY
Evrod Cassimy is a son and a brother to his family and a vocalist and multi-talented artist to the public and the newest addition to WMTV NBC 15.
When I asked him what he enjoyed most about being a reporter and an anchor he responded "the most wonderful thing is that I have the distinct honor and privilege to meet different people every day. My day is never the same. There is always the anticipation of doing something new, something spontaneous." Spontaneous is a word that may be scary to others, but never for this young man of high ambition and drive.
Evrod was raised in Rockford, Illinois. He attended Rockford Christian High School and then went on to graduate from Columbia College in Chicago with a degree in Television Broadcast Journalism. His vocal talents were made known at the recent NAACP banquet held in the Village as he introduced the keynote speaker. Evrod began singing at the tender age of 3 when he started singing at church. His talent matured and allowed him to release his first demo at age 18, entitled Everything Evrod. This young man of great presence and quiet demeanor was once at a place of discouragement as he pursued his music career while attending school at the same time. Although times weren't easy, he graduated college, secured his very first job as a reporter (KJCT News in Grand Junction, CO), and pursued his music career.
Evrod is very proud of the work that he does at Channel 15. "There are days that are more challenging than others. Sometimes we have to set aside personal life issues to reach the ultimate goal of being a positive role model for who you represent. You have to maintain your sense of humor. You also have to maintain your character and be entertaining as well as personable.
Evrod doesn't see reporting the news as a negative thing. "More times than not, we have to talk about the negative things that take place. My goal in broadcasting is to cover stories that affect a larger audience by not only highlighting the negative but also turning them into a positive."
One of the things Evrod enjoys about his work at NBC 15 is that his superiors give him access to so many resources. He is grateful to have access to the answers tha twill ultimately empower others and give them a sense of hope. He is thankful for the opportunity that he has had to follow his dream of being a news reporter. He gives credit for much of his success to Art Norman who is a fellow NBC anchor in Chicago, Illinois. "Art continues to give me good sound advice as my career develops. I am blessed to have him in my life." He is also thankful for Anna Davlantes, another NBC reporter in Chicago. She told me the importance of pursuing my passion in these words: "The greater the passion the greater the accomplishment."

Evrod even enjoys writing music, singing and watching the news when he is away from work. he would also like to travel whenever he can find the time. His parents are Avril and Glenn Cassimy who live in Rockford, Illinois.

Evrod Featured On Columbia College Website - February 5, 2007
Evrod is the featured alumni on Columbia College Chicago's website. There he talks about his recent signing with ABC Television. Click
here to see the article. Or read it below.
"It’s so crazy to look back and say I spent three years of my life at Columbia College. It seemed like just yesterday when I was taking Aesthetics and Storytelling with Frank Bianco. I was a Broadcast Journalism major, just like everyone else it seemed, and had no idea what was ahead of me for the next three years.
I was forced to take news quizzes every day -- failing most of them of course. I wrote articles for Jim Sulski’s class that I never turned in until the end of the semester. I remember struggling through Steven Lattimore’s intense classes. I even checked out cameras almost every day at the cage. When I look back at all of that, I realize how necessary it was for me to learn everything I did.
I’m 22-years-old college graduate now. Before I started at Columbia, I was a singer, and during my senior year of high school, I put together my first single. I was working and going to school full-time and my manager had me in the studio at times when I should have been sleeping. I contemplated dropping out of school my last semester plenty of times and only made it to a little bit more than half of my classes. I worked very hard as I tried to pursue two careers at the same time. However, I don’t think I would be where I am today had I not attended Columbia.
I graduated in May with a degree in Television Broadcast Journalism and can say that everything I learned at Columbia, I use today. After I graduated, I took three months off to pursue my music and went on a radio promotional tour. I did radio interviews and got to hear my music on the radio for the first time.
In September, I applied to my first TV station and surprisingly got hired. I am now reporting the news at KJCT News 8 in Grand Junction, Co.
“I was determined to start in as big of a market as possible, and although most people have never heard of Grand Junction, it's a metropolis of its own. ”
It’s just like what I imagined it would be. I find myself watching the news every morning and afternoon as if there is a news quiz the next day. I have to write stories with deadlines later that day. I find that I am constantly reminded about my years in Columbia. Teachers told me that I would have to start in a small no-name city, and that definitely discouraged me, but my time here has proved that you make your career by the time you put in in college.
I was determined to start in as big of a market as possible, and although most people have never heard of Grand Junction, it’s a metropolis of its own. I am well prepared and it’s all due to the real world experience I gained at Columbia. I came in knowing the professional jargon because my teachers were or had been working professionals themselves. I often joked with my colleagues about how heavy those cameras are and I didn’t see the relevance of some of the stories I had to write; but the end result has definitely been worth it.
Right now, local radio stations in Grand Junction and other cities are playing my music and I am reporting the news and getting paid for it. I am fulfilling my dreams by doing two things I love, thanks to my education at Columbia College. I miss the city everyday, but I know that one day I hope to be at NBC Tower across from the Wrigley Building reporting the news with Allison Rosati and Warner Saunders.
The greatest thing I can share with those still at Columbia is don’t take for granted the work you are doing now, because it’s preparing you for your future."
